FAQs

If you can’t find the answer to your question here, please contact the MotorSport NZ office.

I am new to MotorSport Online

Select the Login / Register link at the top of the page.  This will take you to the MotorSport Online login page.

Initial registrations: from the login screen, click the “New to MotorSport NZ? Register here” button.

You will be redirected to a page that requests your name, current email address and DOB. Fill in all the required fields and read, agree to the declaration by ticking the box and answer the security question. (The security question has been included to prevent unauthorised automated attempts to gain access to our system). Simply type the words or numbers shown into the text box in the yellow square.

Once you have cpmpleted the registration process as above you will receive an email (as below) form the MotorSport NZ office which will contain your initial login details.

Simply click on the ‘confirm’ button in the email and enter the user name and password from the email into the fields on the webpage.  Note that both the user name and the password are case sensitive, so be careful you don’t have your caps lock on!

(Tip: It is highly recommended that you copy the password from the email prior to clicking on the confirm button and then paste into the password field on the login page).

Then simply press the big blue ‘SYSTEM START’ button.

This will direct you to the initial registration page, which you will need to fill out (note the items with a red asterisk are compulsory).  Once the page has been completed, simply press the ‘continue’ button at the bottom and you are away!

I am having problems logging in to MotorSport Online

There are two main reasons why people have difficulty logging in to the MotorSport Online system;

One, the both the user name and the password are case-sensitive.  So if your username has capitals or any form of punctuation in it (including spaces) then those need to be included as well.

and Two, don’t use a mobile device.  The system is not set up (yet) for mobile devices, so you will strike problems if you try and log in using your smart phone or an ipad.  Any standard PC or laptop will enable you to log in without any problems at all (assuming you can remember your username and password!).

I have forgotten my MotorSport Online username or password

Select the Login / Register link at the top of the page.  This will take you to the MotorSport Online login page.

For current MotorSport NZ licence holders to request a new password: from the login screen click on the ‘Forgot Password?’ button.

You will be redirected to a page that requests your name, current email address and current licence number, as well as a security question.  (The security question has been included to prevent unauthorised automated attempts to gain access to our system). Simply type the words or numbers shown into the text box in the yellow square.

Note that the password reset request is a manual process within the MotorSport NZ office, so if you request a new password outside of normal business hours, it will be sent to you on the next business day.

Once you have completed the registration process as above you will receive an email (as below) from the MotorSport office which will contain your initial login details.

Simply click on the ‘confirm’ button in the email and enter the user name and password from the email into the fields on the webpage.  Note that both the user name and the password are case sensitive, so be careful you don’t have your caps lock on!

(Tip: It is recommended that you copy the password from the email prior to clicking on the confirm button and then paste into the password field on the login page).

Then simply press the big blue ‘SYSTEM START’ button.

Initially this will direct you to a new page where you will be asked to choose a new password and (optionally) a new user name.  Once you have completed the screen and clicked on the ‘continue’ button, the system will require you to log on with your new credentials and you’re away!

What sort of competition licence will I need?

What sort of competition licence you need will depend on the type of motorsport that you intend to do.

For club level or drifting events you will need an M Grade licence

For circuit racing you will need a C Grade licence

For rally or Targa events you will need a R Grade licence

How do I apply for a competition licence?

Firstly, you must register through the MotorSport Online system.

Once registered click on the Licence tab on your dashboard and then select add new licence.  This will lead you through the process of applying for the licence.

Then contact a licence examiner and set up a time to sit your licence test.

Once the test has been sat and passed the licence examiner will upload the test result and we will process the licence and post it out to you.  This will generally take between 3-5 working days from receipt of the test result.  Note that there may be additional medical requirements to be completed prior to licence issue.

What is an Authority Card and do I need one?

An Authority Card is required to certify dedicated motorsport modifications and is used to obtain a WOF. They are required for any vehicle modified for competition use that are required to be used on public roads. All MotorSport NZ competiton licence holders are eligible to apply for an Authority Card. More information on Authority Cards can be found here.

My competition licence has expired and I have let it lapse for a while - can I still renew it?

You can let your competition licence lapse for a maximum of 2 years from the date of expiry of the last issued card.

You can renew your competition licence as normal during that 2 year period, however after that 2 year grace period has expired any application will be treated as a new application and you will be required to re-sit the appropriate exam.

If you renew your competition licence within 3 months of the expiry date then your licence will retain the original expiry month and you will be charged a pro-rata fee for the renewal.  If it renewed after that 3 month period a new expiry date will be set to 12 months from date of application and you will be charged the full amount for the licence.

How do I upgrade my competition licence?

To upgrade from your current M Grade licence to a National Grade (C or R Grade) you must apply for the upgrade through the licence tab on your MotorSport Online dashboard. This will lead you through the process of applying for the upgrade.

Note: to upgrade to an International Grade licence please contact the MotorSport NZ office.

I want to compete overseas - What do I do?
